The little urn had belonged to England since August 2009, but, after a 1,577-day wait, it is back with Australia, who have thoroughly outclassed their opponents Down Under.

Chasing 504 following Australia's declaration on day four, the tourists were all out for 353 before tea on the final day.

After Matt Prior had gone for 26, Ben Stokes gave England hope of an unlikely victory by registering his maiden Test century.

However, after the Durham all-rounder's fine innings of 120 had been brought to an end, England's tail capitulated.

Tim Bresnan made 12 off 40 deliveries, while Graeme Swann (4) and James Anderson (2) failed to reach double figures. Stuart Broad finished unbeaten on two.

Mitchell Johnson accounted for the dismissal of Prior, who was caught behind by Brad Haddin.

Johnson, who has been Australia's star of the series so far, was also responsible for removing Bresnan and Anderson, with Chris Rogers and George Bailey taking the catches.

Nathan Lyon dismissed Stokes when the New Zealand-born Cumbrian edged into Haddin's safe gloves.

Swann was Lyon's other victim of the day thanks to a simple catch at short-leg by Steve Smith, who was named as Man of the Match.
