Rain forces Australia vs. India to be abandoned

Persistent rain leads to the abandonment of the tri-series match between Australia and India in Sydney.

The tri-series match between Australia and India in Sydney has been abandoned due to rain.

The start of the match was delayed by 40 minutes after continuous drizzle during the morning, with further delays eventually leading to the abandonment of play.

With clouds appearing overhead, Australia captain George Bailey won the toss and put India in to bat.

However, the teams were forced off after just 16 balls as rain began to fall. When play resumed, Shikhar Dhawan became the first Indian batsman to be dismissed when he was caught at slip off the bowling of Mitchell Starc.

Ambati Rayudu hit a quickfire 23 off 26 balls before he lofted a catch to David Warner, giving Mitchell Marsh his first wicket of the day.

With India on 69-2, the covers came on again before the match was eventually called off after the poor weather failed to improve.

The abandonment means that the winner of England vs. India on Friday will face Australia in the tri-series final.
