Faf du Plessis scored an unbeaten 110 on his debut to help South Africa secure a remarkable draw against Australia.

South Africa have secured an unlikely draw against Australia in the second Test in Brisbane.

The Proteas resumed play on day five requiring 430 for the victory, with the hosts in the ascendancy.

Debutant Faf du Plessis hit 110 not out to earn the man-of-the-match award and become the first South African to score a 50 and a century in his maiden Test.

The draw means that South Africa now have a place in the history books, after surviving the fourth highest number of overs to save a Test encounter.

Australia paceman Peter Siddle went through the pain barrier to give his side hope while spinner Nathan Lyon took 3-49, but Du Plessis along with AB de Villiers (33) and then Jacques Kallis (46) achieved a result from the jaws of defeat.

Australia lead the series 1-0 going into the third Test in Perth on Friday.
