Alastair Cook hails Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow partnership

England captain Alastair Cook heaps praise on Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow for their 399-run partnership in the first innings of the second Test against South Africa.

England captain Alastair Cook has described the first-innings partnership between Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow during the second Test against South Africa as an 'I was there' moment.

The duo put on a scintillating display to race to 399 runs from just 57.4 overs, including the second-fastest Test double-century in history from Stokes.

England eventually declared on 629-6 to seemingly put themselves in command of the match, but South Africa responded in kind and the contest ended as a draw.

"The partnership between Bluey and Stokesy, the 400 off about 300 balls (351), accelerated the game really quickly and it was an outstanding partnership," Cook told Sky Sports News.

"It was a pleasure and a privilege to watch. I think it was an 'I was there' moment and that put us in the box seat.

"To get 600 when you've conceded 600 was a brilliant effort from [South Africa], but we did a lot of really good things with the ball and it would have been very different if we had taken all of our chances."

England still lead the four-match series 1-0.
