England put themselves in a strong position on the first day of the third Test against India at Edgbaston.

Batting first, the tourists posted a score of 244 which, although poor by their standards, would have been significantly worse without a strong contribution from captain MS Dhoni.

Virender Sehwag was out for a golden duck, courtesy of the bowling of Stuart Broad, while Dravid (22), Tendulkar (1) and Laxman (30) did little to help India's cause.

Dhoni took the initiative for his side and dragged them back into the tie, posting a quick-fire 77 which included a partnership with Praveen Kumar of 95 runs from 14 overs. Kumar was then dismissed via a review.

Broad was again the pick of the England bowlers after impressive perfomances with both bat and ball in the previous two Tests, finishing with figures of 4-53, while Tim Bresnan ended the day with 4-62. Jimmy Anderson made up the rest of the wickets.

The hosts took to the crease after tea and finished on 84-0, thanks to the batting of captain Andrew Strauss (52) and Alistair Cook (27).

Victory for England in this third Test would see them overtake India to become the number one side in the world.
