Former Australia bowler Shane Warne has stated his belief that Michael Vaughan would be the ideal candidate to become managing director of the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The former England captain has been linked with the new role of 'Director of England Cricket' following Paul Downton's exit on Wednesday.

Vaughan captained England to victory in the 2005 Ashes, and Warne believes that his experience in the game would make him an asset to the ECB.

"They should have him involved, in whatever capacity that is because he's a winning captain, he plays the game the right way," Warne told Sky Sports News.

"He's got some great ideas about the game, keeps things pretty simple and I think sometimes off-field people, directors of cricket and these guys complicate it too much."

Vaughan played 82 Tests for England between 1999 and 2008, captaining the side 51 times.
