AB De Villiers hit 69 and Hashim Amla scored 56, as the South Africans reached 196-5 and achieved the highest score of the tournament so far.

Alex Hales (38), Jos Buttler (34) and Ravi Bopara (31) offered England's resistance, but they fell three runs short of their target on 193-7.

The result means that South Africa are through to the semi-finals, while Sri Lanka and New Zealand will play off for the second qualifying spot.

England will play their final game of the tournament against the already eliminated Netherlands on Monday.
