Joe Root helps England to 430

Joe Root makes a knock of 58 to help England set Australia A a target of 430 for their first innings in Hobart.

A punchy half-century from Joe Root has helped England to reach 430 in their first innings against Australia A in Hobart.

With the first two days washed out through the weather, the home side wasted no time in ripping through the tourists' top order, as Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Gary Ballance were all dismissed for miserly totals.

Alastair Cook and Michael Carberry had put on a first-wicket stand of 318, but the Three Lions had slightly stalled on 363 by the time Root came to the crease.

However, he got England motoring once again, hitting an unbeaten 58 before the declaration eventually came at 430-7, with Matt Prior and Stuart Broad being the men sent back to the pavilion.

A result seems unlikely with tomorrow being the final day of scheduled play.
