Half centuries from Martin Guptill and Brendan McCullum score half centuries to ensure New Zealand hold a lead heading into the final day of the first Test against the West Indies.

West Indies' pursuit of a Test victory has been halted by some stubborn batting from New Zealand in Antigua on day four.

Narsingh Deonarine and Darren Sammy added 80 runs to their overnight partnership, with captain Sammy reaching his half century with a big six off Daniel Vettori.

However, the hosts lost their final four wickets for just 25 runs, meaning they were all out for 522 and that New Zealand started their second innings 171 runs behind.

The Black Caps looked determined for the remainder of the day though, with Martin Guptill (67) and Brendan McCullum (84) both making half centuries before being dismissed.

New Zealand will begin the final day 28 runs ahead, with Ross Taylor and Neil Wagner both at the crease.
