The hosts started the day on 131-0 after bowling their opponents all out for 167 and they left the field of play with a healthy score of 255-2.

Debutant Hamish Rutherford picked up where he left off on Wednesday as he made his way onto 167 not out at the end of the session.

England made a breakthrough when opener Peter Fulton was caught behind by Matt Prior off the bowling of James Anderson for 55 to leave New Zealand on 158-1.

They took a second wicket 15 minutes before the break as Kane Williamson was bowled by Monty Panesar for 24.
