Jonathan Trott finished as top scorer for England as he helped himself to 68, with Ian Bell and Joe Root scoring 64 and 56 respectively.
Kane Williamson made 74 runs for the home side before the partnership of Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill saw the Black Caps claim the win in the final over.
McCullum ran himself to a score of 68, with Guptill making 22 runs for the home side.
