Peter Moores is apparently poised to be given a second shot at the England coaching role.
The Lancashire chief was in charge of the national side between April 2007 and January 2009, before he was removed following a conflict with Kevin Pietersen.
With Pietersen now in enforced international retirement, Moores was considered to be a contender to replace Andy Flower, who was reassigned after the disastrous Ashes tour to Australia this winter.
Current limited-overs coach Ashley Giles was believed to be the favourite, but BBC Sport understands that Moores will be appointed ahead of the former England spinner following this week's interviews.
Nottinghamshire's Mick Newell and Sussex's Mark Robinson also spoke to the England and Wales Cricket Board, who are planning to confirm the return of Moores at Lord's at 10.30am on Saturday.
The 51-year-old guided Lancashire to their first County Championship title in 77 years in 2011.
