Sydney Sixers have beaten defending Big Bash champions Brisbane Heat by four runs in their clash at The Gabba.

Brisbane won the toss and elected to field, and they made an early breakthrough when Nic Maddinson was dismissed for just nine runs.

Michael Lumb helped Sydney to recover, top-scoring with a knock of 56 off 42 balls before he was caught out by James Hopes.

Moises Henriques (19) and Marcus North (13) helped the score to tick along as the Sixers ended on 140-8 from their 20 overs.

Cameron Gannon was the pick of the Brisbane bowlers with four wickets for 24 runs.

Chasing 141 to win, Brisbane batsman Craig Kieswetter notched 38 off 40 deliveries before he was dismissed by Lee. Joe Burns and Daniel Christian soon followed Kieswetter back to the pavilion having made just one run apiece.

Chris Lynn (34) and Chris Sabburg (19*) gave Brisbane hope, but when needing a six off the final ball to win, Ben Cutting was caught out by Josh Hazlewood as Brisbane fell five runs short of victory.
