Robert Thornton suffers first-round defeat at European Championship

Robert Thornton, who won the World Grand Prix earlier this month, loses to John Henderson in the first round of the European Championship.

Robert Thornton has been knocked out of the European Championship after losing 6-4 to Scottish compatriot John Henderson.

Thornton, who won the World Grand Prix in Dublin earlier this month, fell victim to an impressive performance from Henderson, who hit four maximums on his way to victory.

Peter Wright started slowly in his clash with Alan Norris before hitting form to register a 6-3 win over the former Lakeside finalist.

Stephen Bunting won his first televised ranking match since March by taking out 64 to defeat Ian White by a 6-5 scoreline.

World number nine Michael Smith is through to the last 16 after holding his nerve to beat Gerwyn Price 6-4, while Simon Whitlock joined him in the next round with a 6-2 win against Magnus Caris.

Christian Kist missed double 12 for a nine darter during his 6-4 defeat to Rowby-John Rodriguez, while Justin Pipe and Cristo Reyes recorded 6-2 victories against Dirk van Duijvenbode and Max Hopp respectively.
