Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod hints at what's to come for Shona and David as she makes a long-awaited return to the cobbles.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has revealed that Shona (Julia Goulding) will still not recognise David (Jack P Shepherd) when she returns to the cobbles.

Shona slipped into a coma after being shot during the winter wonderland massacre and, upon waking, had no memory of her husband or his family - mistaking David's son Max for her own son Clayton.

The cafe worker transferred to a Leeds rehab facility and eventually ordered David to stop visiting her and told him she wants a divorce, but for reasons yet unknown makes a return to Weatherfield in upcoming episodes.

"It's not love at first sight when she sees him – for his part, David's challenge is to make her fall back in love with him," MacLeod said in a press call this week. "But she's also a different proposition too so he also has to fall back in love with her.

"Nobody has a long term desire to split them up so they will have a happy ending. They're like cheese and crackers – none are good without the other. But it's a very unique and emotionally complicated story.

"What we want to do is ensure that it feels like a love story so we need some kind of warm ending - or a confetti moment for the audience to punch the air with joy."

Coronation Street continues Friday at 7.30pm on ITV.
