EastEnders favourite Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) is battling dementia as part of his return storyline, it has been revealed.
After more than 26 years away from Walford, Nigel made a surprise return on Christmas Eve to reconnect with old friend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) but it was clear that he has been hiding something.
This week has seen him open up to Yolande (Angela Wynter) about a recent health diagnosis of young onset dementia, and in future episodes he will be seen discussing the condition in more depth and explaining his reasons for coming back to E20.
Speaking about the storyline, which was developed in conjunction with the charity Dementia UK, exec producer Chris Clenshaw said: "Nigel's story will explore the challenges faced by people diagnosed with young on-set dementia and their loved ones, which is why working with Dementia UK has been so vital.
"As Nigel's story unfolds, viewers will learn more about the decisions he's made and how he's coping with such a difficult diagnosis."
