Adelaide United thrash Wellington Phoenix

Adelaide United secure a 5-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix in their A-League clash at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Adelaide United have recorded a comfortable 5-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix in the A-League at Hindmarsh Stadium.

The hosts made a bright start to the match and opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Jeronimo Neumann, who placed his shot into the top corner after being picked out by Michael Zullo.

John Kosmina's side extended their lead six minutes later when Neumann found Sergio Cirio, who slotted a composed finish beyond goalkeeper Glen Moss.

Wellington struggled to create any meaningful opportunities during the first half, as the hosts went close to scoring once more through Zullo's free kick, which flew narrowly wide of the post.

Adelaide made it 3-0 on 59 minutes through Fabio Ferreira, who scored after being played through on goal by Tarek Elrich. Ferreira then turned provider just three minutes later when his cross was headed home by Neumann.

Kenny Cunningham scored a 67th-minute consolation for the visitors when he collected Matthrew Ridenton's pass before striking a powerful low finish beyond Eugene Galekovic. However, they were reduced to 10 men five minutes later when Manny Muscat was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Adelaide added a fifth goal in injury time through Awer Mabil, who fired past Moss after good work by Neumann.
