Combined XI: Tottenham Hotspur vs. Arsenal

Ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, Sports Mole picks a combined XI from both squads.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to pile more misery on North London rivals Arsenal when the two teams lock horns in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs, who played out a goalless draw with Chelsea last weekend, currently top the table with 21 points and have won four of their last five league matches during a strong run of form.

Arsenal, on the other hand, are down in 14th position in England's top flight, having only picked up 13 points from their 10 matches during a poor start to 2020-21.

The Gunners have only won one of their last six in the league, meanwhile, and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium last time out.

Mikel Arteta's side will enter this game off the back of a positive result, though, having thumped Molde 4-1 in the Europa League on Thursday, while Tottenham played out a 3-3 draw with LASK Linz in the same competition on the same night.

Some of the league's biggest talents will be on display in this game and with that in mind, Sports Mole picks a combined XI from both squads, using only players available for the contest.

The goalkeeping spot in this particular XI was difficult to select, with Bernd Leno showing some good form for Arsenal. The 28-year-old has only kept three clean sheets in 10 league appearances this season, though, while Tottenham's Hugo Lloris has produced four shutouts. It was a tough call as both stoppers have impressed at stages this season, but Lloris's longevity just sees the Frenchman get the nod here.

It made sense to select a back three considering the players available, and Arsenal have two defenders in the XI, with Kieran Tierney joined by summer arrival Gabriel Magalhaes. The Gunners have only conceded 12 times in the league this season, which is far from disastrous, and Tierney and Gabriel have been two of their better performers this term.

The other spot is taken by fit-again Toby Alderweireld, who has recently spent time on the sidelines with a muscular issue. Eric Dier has performed impressively under Jose Mourinho, but there are still question marks surrounding the England international over the course of a whole season.

Sergio Reguilon gets the nod as the left-sided wing-back, with the Spaniard impressing since arriving from Real Madrid over the summer, meaning that Bukayo Saka switches across to the right. Saka, who is still just 19 years old, has again shown his quality for the Gunners this season and certainly has a chance of making the England squad for next summer's European championships.

The two central midfielders both come from Tottenham, and it will not come as a surprise to many that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is included. The 25-year-old has not missed a minute of Premier League football for Spurs this season, immediately becoming a key player for Mourinho. Tanguy Ndombele did not manage to settle as quickly as Hojbjerg upon his arrival, but the Frenchman has started to show his quality on a more consistent basis and impressed in the goalless draw with Chelsea last weekend.

The front three, in truth, was not difficult to select. Son Heung-min has been in sensational form for Tottenham this season, scoring 12 times and registering five assists in 16 outings in all competitions. The South Korea international has nine goals in 10 Premier League appearances, meanwhile, and lines up on the right of this particular XI, allowing Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to feature on the left.

It would be fair to say that Aubameyang's form for Arteta's side this season has been disappointing, managing just two goals in 10 Premier League appearances. The 31-year-old remains Arsenal's most dangerous player, though, and it would have been incredibly tough to leave him out of this side considering his overall form for the capital giants.

Harry Kane, unsurprisingly, leads the line here; the England international has taken his game to a new level this season, scoring 13 times and providing 11 assists in 16 appearances in all competitions. The 27-year-old has seven goals and nine assists in 10 league outings this term, and he will be determined to fire Mourinho's side to victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
