Southampton boss Mark Hughes says that everyone else has been playing "catch-up" to Arsene Wenger during his time at Arsenal.

Southampton boss Mark Hughes has said that Arsene Wenger has "moved the goalposts for everyone else" during his time in English football.

On Friday, Wenger announced that he would leave Arsenal at the end of the season after deciding to end his 22-year spell with the North London outfit.

Neil Warnock has claimed that English football 'owes' Wenger, and Hughes has echoed those thoughts by suggesting that everyone else has had to play "catch-up" since the Frenchman's arrival in 1996.

At a press conference, the 54-year-old told reporters: "He came with different ideas and views on how the game should be played and moved the goalposts for everyone else.

"He has been a huge influence on the game in this country and deserves his place in history. At the outset he was ahead of everyone and we have had to catch up."

During his time at Arsenal, Wenger has won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.
