Paris Saint-Germain's Lionel Messi is reportedly set to return to Barcelona next summer when his current contract expires.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi is reportedly poised to return to Barcelona next summer.

After leaving Barcelona in 2021 due to the club's financial restrictions, Messi signed for PSG where he endured a difficult first season.

Messi fell below his usual high standards, registering 11 goals and 15 assists in 34 appearances last term, however, he has upped his game in the opening 12 matches of the current campaign.

The Argentina international already has seven goals to his name as well as eight assists, helping PSG top the Ligue 1 table and their Champions League group.

Despite beginning the season in fine form, according Argentine reporter Veronica Brunati, Messi's PSG future appears to be in doubt with a Barcelona return on the cards.

The 35-year-old is expected to re-sign for the Catalan giants on July 1, when his two-year deal with the French champions expires.

Previous reports indicated that Messi had fallen out with Joan Laporta, but after 'making peace' with the Barcelona president, he is set to rejoin the club where he came through the famous La Masia academy.

Messi made 778 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 672 goals and providing 303 assists.
