Reliving Chelsea's last three fixtures with Brentford

Chelsea and Brentford have not squared off in a top-flight game since 1947, but that has not prevented the two London clubs from being regular foes over the past eight years.

Having waited 74 years to renew acquaintances in the top flight, many Brentford and Chelsea supporters are going to be feeling excited ahead of Saturday's Premier League fixture at the Brentford Community Stadium.

However, while it could be perceived that these London neighbours are strangers to each other, that most certainly is not the case with three matches having taken place since the start of 2013.

At a time when the two clubs are separated by just four points in the table, Sports Mole takes a look at the the most recent contests between the Bees and the Blues.

When Chelsea made the trip to Griffin Park for this FA Cup fourth round tie, they were still getting used to life under Rafael Benitez.

The Spaniard's two defeats in as many months had been in London derbies, to West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers respectively, and a strong team were under pressure to deliver against their League One opponents.

Even with John Terry, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres in the team, Chelsea twice went behind courtesy of goals from Marcello Trotta and Harry Forrester.

However, on both occasions, Brentford were ahead for no more than 13 minutes, and an 83rd-minute equaliser from Torres secured a replay for the Premier League club.

Benitez made several alterations for the second instalment, the likes of Petr Cech, David Luiz and Juan Mata all featuring from the opening whistle.

Brentford had also lost the element of surprise and although they reached the break still on level terms, it was one-way traffic in the second half.

Mata, Oscar, Lampard and Terry all got on the scoresheet during a 27-minute period, ensuring that Chelsea were able to cruise through to the fifth round.

The Blues would go on to reach the semi-finals, beating Manchester United along the way, but Benitez witnessed his side go down 2-1 to Manchester City in the last four.

Four years later and it was all change at both clubs. Chelsea were in the middle of their all-conquering season under Antonio Conte and Brentford were settled in the Championship.

Nevertheless, Brentford's form had been poor heading into the fixture at Stamford Bridge, and it came as little surprise when Chelsea breezed to a commanding win.

Conte handed starts to the likes of Nathan Ake, Nathaniel Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, academy graduates who all wanted to capitalise on a rare chance in the first team.

However, it was Willian, Pedro, Branislav Ivanovic and Michy Batshuayi who netted the goals for the home side, continuing a run which saw them eventually lose out to Arsenal in the final.
