An official from Chester City says that the club would love to tempt Michael Owen out of his impending retirement.

Chester City's chief executive Pat Cluskey has conceded that his club would be keen to have Michael Owen playing for them next season.

Current Stoke City striker Owen revealed yesterday morning that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current campaign.

However, should he change his mind, his hometown club would welcome him to the Deva Stadium with open arms.

"If Michael wants to play again then we'll happily reserve the number 10 shirt for him," Cluskey told BBC Sport. "He is from the area and very proud of where he was brought up.

"He has promoted the club on Twitter. He sponsors some of our players and has recently donated a pair of signed boots to raise money for the youth section.

"We'd love to see Michael wear the blue and white shirt. We already average gates of around 2,500 a game, but if Michael came along then that would double. It would be a great boost for the club and the city."

Chester are currently top of the Blue Square Bet North Division.
