Wayne Rooney intends to win trophies during his time with DC United, despite the club currently occupying bottom place in the MLS Eastern Conference.

Wayne Rooney has said that he is looking forward to putting on the DC United shirt and hopes to help turn around the club's faltering fortunes.

The former Manchester United and Everton ace will make his Major League Soccer bow next weekend when the Black-and-Red take on the Vancouver Whitecaps at Audi Field.

Sunday's match will mark the beginning of a new era for United, as they run out at their new 20,000-seater ground for the first time, which Rooney admits played a big part in his decision to join from boyhood club Everton.

DC currently sit bottom of the Eastern Conference with two wins from 14 games, but the Englishman is hoping to win silverware across the duration of his three-and-a-half-year contract.

"First of all, I want to say a huge thank you to the fans. On the first day when I arrived at the airport, I will never forget the reception you gave me," he told supporters at his unveiling.

"Secondly, to all the owners of the football club for creating this beautiful stadium. When I spoke to them about coming here to play I could tell the excitement they had with the stadium.

"I've seen the new training ground as well which will be completed next year. It played a big part in me coming here. I've come here to win, to help this team move forward and win titles, that's my job here. Hopefully in the next few years we can bring titles and trophies to this wonderful new stadium."

United finished 11th in the Eastern Conference last season and 21st overall.
