Roberto Martinez: 'John Stones to miss next few weeks'

John Stones is likely to miss England's upcoming World Cup qualifiers due to an ankle injury sustained against Manchester United earlier today, Roberto Martinez reveals.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed that John Stones is likely to miss at least the next few weeks due to an ankle injury sustained against Manchester United.

The 20-year-old centre-back damaged his left ankle ligament at Old Trafford earlier today in the Toffees' 2-1 defeat.

Martinez announced immediately after the game that it was too soon to tell the full extent of the problem, although he later confirmed that Stones is not likely to link up with the England squad on international duty this week.

"John Stones has a problem with his ankle. It will be at least a few weeks [until he recovers]," he told reporters. "I don't expect John to be fit for next week. It is such a massive blow because he plays with an incredible arrogance. We will assess him in the next 48 hours."

Stones has represented the Three Lions on four previous occasions.
