Interim Everton boss David Unsworth confirms reports that midfielder Idrissa is close to signing a new contract with the Toffees.

Interim Everton boss David Unsworth has revealed that the Toffees are close to agreeing a new contract with midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

On Friday, reports suggested that the 28-year-old had been offered fresh terms in order to fend off interested clubs, and Unsworth has admitted that negotiations have been taking place in recent weeks.

The 44-year-old told reporters: "We are very close and that's great news for Idrissa and great news for me. He's been great over the period of time. I have seen his performances.

"At Aston Villa he was a top player as well and a humble guy. So to tie him down for a number of years is great."

Gueye has scored twice in 48 appearances since signing from Villa in August 2016.
