Mike Phelan urges Hull City to build on win over Southampton

Phelan: 'We must build on Southampton win'

Hull City manager Mike Phelan challenges his side to kick on from their 2-1 victory over Southampton, which ended a six-match losing streak in the Premier League.

Hull City manager Mike Phelan has urged his side to use their 2-1 victory over Southampton as a springboard for the rest of the season.

The Tigers ended a six-match losing streak and picked up their first win since August at the KCOM Stadium on Sunday, scoring two goals in as many second-half minutes to come from behind against the Saints.

Phelan believes that the win will restore confidence amongst his players and is keen to pick up where they left off after the international break.

"I wanted to hit the 10-point mark a bit sooner than we have. A point a game at this stage gives you a real chance to kick on because you often get a three or four-game run that you look at and think that you can gain more points from. We've come through a patch of results that has been hard and has probably knocked confidence a little bit, but right now confidence is high again," he told the club's official website.

"Every team in and around us seemed to pick up points on Saturday, so we were playing Southampton knowing we needed something to keep in touch and we managed to do that. We've got 10 points from 11 games with a couple of big games coming up after the international break. It's important that we stay level-headed and composed. We performed well in defeat at Watford last weekend but didn't get anything from the game. This week we have got something against a very good Southampton team.

"I think the break has come at the right time for us, because of the injuries we've suffered and because of the work-rate and effort that the players have put in. We'll start again properly a week from now and hope that those players going away on international duty return to us fit and well."

Hull's first match after the international break will see them take on fellow strugglers Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
