Scotland face further disruption ahead of Euro 2024 with one player dropping out of their provisional squad and an uncapped player being selected in his place.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has called up forward Tommy Conway to his provisional Euro 2024 squad.

On the back of three notable injuries before his original selection in May, Clarke had hoped for more luck ahead of and during their two warm-up friendlies.

However, experienced striker Lyndon Dykes was forced to withdraw last week after suffering an ankle injury in training, significantly hitting the Tartan Army's plans in attack.

That reduced Clarke to four recognised options in the final third, including Liverpool teenager Ben Doak who had not made an appearance for his club since December due to a knee injury.

While there had been hope that the 18-year-old could prove to be an asset off the substitutes' bench in Germany later this month, the winger has now been withdrawn.

Conway brought into the mix

As a result, Clarke has decided to hand a promotion to Conway who represented Scotland Under-21s against Turkey on Monday.

That represented the second time in six matches that the 21-year-old had netted at that level and it has been enough for Clarke to hand him an opportunity to impress in the senior ranks.

Conway has emerged as one of Bristol City's most notable players, contributing 25 goals and six assists from his 92 appearances in all competitions.

Although he only managed 10 strikes in 39 Championship outings during 2023-24, he netted three times in his final five outings of the season.

Scotland's final game before Euro 2024 is a home fixture against Finland on Friday night and Conway is likely to feature off the substitutes' bench at some point.

Can Conway expect to become prominent member of squad?

Given Scotland's limited options in the final third, it is somewhat of a surprise Conway has not been bloodied at the highest level before now.

As well as Dykes, Che Adams and Lawrence Shankland are deemed to be ahead of him in the pecking order, but neither of the trio have been particularly prolific for their country.

With Scotland having no centre-forwards in the mix below the age of 27 aside from Conway, he has the chance to become a long-term member of the group.
