Xherdan Shaqiri is set to miss Liverpool's opening pre-season games after suffering a calf tear on international duty with Switzerland.

Liverpool have confirmed that winger Xherdan Shaqiri suffered a calf injury while playing for Switzerland during the UEFA Nations League finals.

Shaqiri will miss Liverpool's opening pre-season games, including Thursday's clash with local rivals Tranmere Rovers and a tour of the United States next week.

Other players may be given the chance to impress following Shaqiri's injury, which has been confirmed by Jurgen Klopp on the club's official website, particularly as attacking trio Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have been given extended holidays after their international exploits over the summer.

Divock Origi, who is reportedly set to sign a new deal at Anfield, and 19-year-old Rhian Brewster may feature heavily in the opening games of Klopp's pre-season regime.

It is believed that Shaqiri's injury is not too serious and he will be ready for Liverpool's season opener at home to Norwich City on Friday, August 9.

The 27-year-old scored six goals in 30 club appearances last season and picked up his second Champions League winner's medal.
