Carlo Ancelotti: 'I tried to sign Steven Gerrard'

Incoming Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti reveals that he tried to sign Steven Gerrard from Liverpool during his time in charge of AC Milan.

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that he tried to sign Steven Gerrard from Liverpool during his time in charge of AC Milan.

The pair famously came up against each other in the 2005 Champions League final, when Gerrard sparked a remarkable second-half comeback in Istanbul to help Liverpool to their fifth European Cup.

Ancelotti did gain a measure of revenge two years later in a repeat of that final, but the incoming Bayern Munich boss admitted that he once tried to poach the former England captain from Anfield.

When asked by FourFourTwo to name the one player he wished he had signed, Ancelotti said: "I tried to sign Steven Gerrard from Liverpool but it just wasn't possible."

Ancelotti spent eight years in charge of the Rossoneri, winning one Serie A title, a Coppa Italia and two Champions League crowns.
