Michael Owen: 'Brendan Rodgers should be given more time at Liverpool'

Michael Owen believes that Brendan Rodgers deserves to stay on as manager of Liverpool for another year at least.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has insisted that Reds manager Brendan Rodgers should be given more time to succeed at Anfield.

The Merseyside outfit will end the season without a trophy after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa in the semi-finals on Sunday and will not match last season's second-placed finish in the Premier League.

Rodgers has failed to lift silverware during his three-year spell at Liverpool, which has led to some questioning his position, but Owen believes that the Northern Irishman has earned the chance to stay on.

"He should be given more time," Owen told BT Sport. "Last season was the best football, the most exciting season to be a Liverpool fan in years.

"I think Brendan Rodgers is a very good manager, I think he certainly deserves another year just based on that season.

"It has been a disappointing season, but I do think that there's so many positives as well. I don't think they're in a worse position than when he took over, so I do think he deserves another year."

Rodgers became Liverpool boss in the summer of 2012.
