Jamie Carragher: 'Steven Gerrard won't leave Liverpool for English club'

Jamie Carragher rejects suggestions that Steven Gerrard will leave Liverpool to join another English club.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has rejected suggestions that Steven Gerrard will leave Merseyside for another English club.

The 34-year-old Liverpool captain recently admitted that he will leave Anfield in the summer if he is not offered a new contract.

Some reports have claimed that reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are interested in signing the midfielder following their loan acquisition of former Chelsea star Frank Lampard in the summer.

However, Carragher believes that Gerrard will be offered fresh terms at Liverpool, for whom he has played since he was nine years old.

Asked about the possibility of Gerrard moving to City, Carragher told Sky Sports News: "No, I don't think he would. I don't think Steven Gerrard would move to another English club. What Frank Lampard's done, don't forget he was at West Ham, he moved to Chelsea.

"I think being a local lad, Liverpool all his career, if he did move on I think maybe abroad, maybe the States, maybe in Europe - who knows, but I'm convinced he's going to stay at the club.

"I think that [the new contract] will all get sorted out in the next couple of weeks."

Meanwhile, reports have claimed that Gerrard will be left out of the team for tonight's Champions League clash against Real Madrid.
