Alex Greenwood hails Man City's United States trio as "serial winners"

Sam Mewis, Rose Lavelle and Abby Dahlkemper all joined City for the the 2020-21 season.

Alex Greenwood has spoken about the high standards and "unbelievable mentality" of the United States trio she and fellow England internationals have been working with at Manchester City.

City have brought in three US players this season in Sam Mewis, Rose Lavelle and Abby Dahlkemper, each of whom were part of the team that won the 2019 Women's World Cup, having defeated England 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Defender Greenwood is among a large contingent of City players in the England squad for Tuesday's friendly against Northern Ireland.

Asked about Mewis, Lavelle and Dahlkemper, Greenwood said: "They're serial winners.

"Even in training they have high standards, high demands of the team and themselves, which is brilliant.

"It's good for the young girls on our team to see as well, what it takes to be as successful as they are.

"They've been brilliant since they've come in – fantastic people first and foremost, and then just serial winners and an unbelievable mentality."

Greenwood has also played against 2019 World Cup winners this season – Tobin Heath and Christen Press are at Manchester United.

And – as she prepares for what will be England's first international in 11 months, at the start of a year she hopes will include being part of a Great Britain team at the summer's Tokyo Olympics – the 27-year-old says she "can't wait" to take on the United States team again.

Regarding the next meeting with the US that comes, Greenwood said: "Maybe we'll understand them a bit more, playing against them, playing with them, their mentality, their way of thinking in certain moments of the game.

"But when it's England versus USA, speaking honestly, I think all that goes out the window and it's the best team on the day. I think we're getting closer and closer every time we play them. To be honest, I can't wait to play them again."

Asked if there had been conversation about the Olympics with the Americans in the dressing room, Greenwood said: "Yeah, we speak about it.

"We speak about winning World Cups and stuff like that, which they can boast about a lot!

"But yeah, we touch on it. We say how exciting it's going to be, we're looking forward to it and hopefully it goes to plan and stuff like that.

"But not really in much detail of who's going to medal and stuff at the moment – we'll save that for a little bit further down the line."

Greenwood's England and City team-mate Ellen White has also given her thoughts on the US trio at the club.

Striker White said: "They are so competitive it is ridiculous!

"Their winning mentality, their competitiveness, their drive every day, they want to develop – those are the main things I take from them.

"They are pushing me to be better and hopefully we are pushing them to be better, it is a mutual thing. We are lucky to have them as part of our squad."
