Louis van Gaal hints that Man United's Luke Shaw will not play again this season

Louis van Gaal says that it is unlikely Luke Shaw will play again for Manchester United this season, all but ending his hopes of getting fit in time for Euro 2016.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has suggested that Luke Shaw will not play again this season, seemingly ending his hopes of playing for England at Euro 2016 this summer.

The 20-year-old left-back has been out of action since suffering a double leg break in last September's Champions League group game against PSV Eindhoven.

Although Van Gaal confirmed today that the former Southampton man would soon return to training, he does not expect the youngster to return to full match fitness before the end of the season.

"Luke Shaw shall start next week the first training sessions on the pitch," Van Gaal told reporters ahead of Sunday's Premier League match against Everton.

"It was always in the gym, on the treadmill, in the swimming pool and so on, but now he can train for the first time with his bodyweight on the pitch, so it is going great for Luke Shaw.

"But also... it shall be very difficult for him to play the final of the FA Cup (should United get there)."

The FA Cup final is on May 21 and England boss Roy Hodgson names his initial squad for Euro 2016 on May 12, so Shaw's chances of competing in France seem slim.
