Manchester United suffer a double injury blow as Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were forced off in the 2-2 quarter-final first leg draw against Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday.

Manchester United have been dealt a double injury blow as centre-back duo Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were both forced off in the 2-2 quarter-final first leg draw against Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday.

With just five minutes remaining in the contest at Old Trafford, Martinez went down unopposed and appeared to have sustained an ankle injury after running with the ball.

Martinez was visibly distressed and was carried to the touchline by Sevilla pair and Argentine compatriots Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna before being taken down the tunnel on a stretcher.

Meanwhile, Varane was withdrawn at half time with an unspecified problem and was replaced in the second half by captain Harry Maguire.

Man United's evening ended in disappointing fashion as they let a two-goal lead slip in the final four minutes, with two own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Maguire cancelling out two first-half strikes from Marcel Sabitzer.

Speaking to MUTV on Martinez's injury, manager Erik ten Hag said: "We have seen Licha Martinez drop out after a moment. There was no opponent involved so it doesn't look that great but we have to wait. The medical staff have to do their job, to give the right diagnosis."

The Dutchman was also questioned about the defender at his post-match press conference, adding: "I cannot tell what it is, but is not an Achilles. I have spoken with him and he is okay and he is calm.

"I think [it is] an injury [that means] he will not play on Sunday. I cannot say what the diagnosis [is]. I prefer to wait and to know what it is."

Ten Hag was unable to provide a clear update on Varane's knock, telling reporters: "That injury, he complained [about it] over the last couple of weeks and we have to see how it is now."

Man United are already having to cope without a number of injured players including star attacker Marcus Rashford, who has missed the last two games, including Thursday's draw, with a muscle problem.

Luke Shaw (hamstring) and Scott McTominay (knock) were also absent against Sevilla, while Alejandro Garnacho (ankle) and Donny van de Beek (knee) remain in the treatment room with long-term injuries.

Another blow for the Red Devils is the suspension of midfielder Bruno Fernandes who will now miss their Europa League second-leg tie in Spain after being booked in the first half.

On United's overall performance against Sevilla, Ten Hag said: "We had the game in our hands. We were 2-0 up and we should've scored a third and a fourth. The game was totally on us, and we had some unlucky moments with injuries.

"We had to make some subs with injuries like Rafa [Raphael Varane] at half time. Also, we had to sub Anthony Martial as it was his first start since coming back. We had to bring off Antony and Bruno [Fernandes] as they were on bookings. So, we had to make some subs. Then we lose control in an unlucky moment and we switched off.

"Then we had another unlucky moment with Lisandro Martinez and we're down to 10 and then we conceded a second own goal. It's bad luck and we have to deal with it.

"In the last part of the game, we had to be more composed and we could've benefitted from counter-attacking situations. We were unlucky in our defending with the deflected shots."

Man United will now turn their attention to Sunday's Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest before travelling to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final with Sevilla next Thursday.
