Romelu Lukaku says that Manchester United were prepared for "any situation" after losing three players to injury in the first half of their draw with Liverpool.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has claimed that his side's goalless draw with Liverpool showed another side of their fighting character.

The Red Devils had to contend with the loss of three players during the opening 45 minutes of Sunday's stalemate at Old Trafford.

Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard, who was only on the field for 15 minutes after being brought on for Mata, all departed with hamstring injuries.

United were also without key men Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic for the clash with their bitter rivals, but Lukaku says that his side were prepared for "any situation".

"I think the coaching staff did a good job of telling us the indications of how to play and we were prepared for any situation," he told Sky Sports News.

"We did well as a team and, from this performance, what we have to take is that we can fight in whatever circumstances. If a player gets injured we can always make sure another player comes in and does a job, so I'm happy.

"Everybody's been talking about us being offensively a great team, but I think defensively we are doing a great job, as well.

"Look at how the defenders are playing. Chris Smalling coming in for the last three games and doing really well, so he raises the level as well. For the defenders the competition is great and for us upfront as well. We have to keep performing how we are and make sure whatever situation we have, we control the game and try to win."

United, unbeaten in 13 domestic matches under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, return to action in midweek with a trip to Crystal Palace.
