Louis van Gaal aims to take Manchester United back to top of the table

Louis van Gaal says that he will try to take Manchester United back to the top spot as soon as possible after being appointed manager on a three-year deal.

New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted that it is imperative for the club to return to dominating ways when he arrives at Old Trafford ahead of the new season.

The Red Devils had a dismal campaign under David Moyes as they finished seventh in the Premier League table and eventually parted ways with the Scotsman.

While Van Gaal is aware of the task at hand, the Dutchman has revealed that he will sit down with former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who spent 27 successful years at United.

"The aim is to bring them back to the number one position as soon as possible because that is where they were under Sir Alex Ferguson," Van Gaal said on a Dutch television chatshow.

"I'll undoubtedly have a drink with Ferguson. We've done that before and we like each other. United is the biggest club in the world marketing-wise, but, also, if you look at their budget, they have to finish high."

Van Gaal, who officially agreed a three-year deal on Monday, will reportedly have £200m to spend on transfers this summer.
