Manchester United confirm David Moyes exit

Manchester United announce that they have sacked manager David Moyes three games before the end of the Scotsman's first season in charge.

Manchester United have announced that they have parted company with manager David Moyes following a dismal first season for the Scotsman at Old Trafford.

Widespread reports emerged on Monday claiming that Sir Alex Ferguson's successor was on the verge of losing his job after witnessing his side lose 11 league games in the campaign so far.

Despite Ferguson calling on the fans to back Moyes after he decided to call time on his glittering 27-year career last summer, 15 defeats in all competitions have caused United's owners, the Glazer family, to dismiss the former Everton boss.

The club announced the news via their Twitter page, which read: "Manchester United announces that David Moyes has left the club. The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role."

The North-West outfit, who are expected to give funds of around £200m to the new manager to spend on transfers in the summer window, sit seventh in the league table, 23 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp have been named as potential contenders for the role at Old Trafford.
