Manchester United have allegedly informed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that they are not prepared to spend over the odds in January.
With certain areas needing to be strengthened after a poor start to the season, United are expected to be active during the transfer window at the beginning of 2020.
According to ESPN, chief executive Ed Woodward is happy to back Solskjaer with a significant amount of funds for the right players.
However, the report adds that Woodward has no intention of overspending in order to ensure that United finish in the top six of the Premier League standings.
Speculation persists over the potential signing of Juventus forward Mario Mandzukic, who could cost in the region of £9m.
A new midfielder may also arrive at Old Trafford, although the report indicates that United are unlikely to be successful with an approach for Barcelona's Ivan Rakitic.
