Owen Hargreaves is believed to have undertaken a medical at the Bridgewater Hospital with a view to a surprise move to Manchester City.
The 30-year-old has been available since he was released from Manchester United at the end of last season. Despite spending four campaigns at Old Trafford, he made just 26 starts for the Reds as his time there was blighted by injury.
Following his release, Hargreaves posted a series of videos on YouTube to show prospective clubs that his fitness problems were behind him.
The midfielder had been strongly linked with a move to West Bromwich Albion, while Aston Villa have also declared an interest in the player.
