Montreal Impact re-sign keeper John Smits

John Smits rejoins Montreal Impact on a short-term loan deal from NASL side FC Edmonton.

Montreal Impact have signed keeper John Smits on a short-term loan deal from NASL side FC Edmonton.

The Canadian outfit will have Smits in their squad for the two-legged CONCACAF Champions League final against Mexican team Club America, with the first leg taking place on Wednesday at the Estadio Azteca.

Smits comes in after Maxime Crepeau was ruled out of the tie with a shoulder injury, while fellow shot-stopper Eric Kronberg is unable to play in the game, having played for Sporting Kansas City earlier in the tournament.

The 26-year-old, who kept six clean sheets last season, won the NASL Golden Gloves in 2014.

Montreal are currently bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference.
