Alan Pardew believes that "terrific" Papiss Cisse showed glimpses of Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer against Liverpool on Sunday.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew believes that Papiss Cisse has similar qualities to that of Magpies legend Alan Shearer.

The Senegal international has made a welcome transition into the famous number nine shirt since moving to the Sports Direct Arena in January.

Pardew has noted that the 26-year-old's performance during Newcastle's 2-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday is reminiscent of the former number nine.

"Cisse was terrific, not just for his two goals [against Liverpool], but for his hold-up play and everything else," Pardew told the Shields Gazette.

"You could've blinked and thought it was Alan [Shearer] – he put that sort of performance in. I couldn't pay him a higher tribute than that."

Newcastle are currently level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League.
