Swansea City centre-back Federico Fernandez is reportedly set for a medical ahead of his proposed move to Newcastle United after the two clubs agreed a fee of around £6m.

Swansea City centre-back Federico Fernandez is reportedly set to undergo a medical ahead of his proposed move to Newcastle United.

The 29-year-old had been expected to leave the Swans following their relegation from the Premier League last season, but played the full 90 minutes in their Championship opener against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Fernandez is understood to have been on the radar of Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez for most of the summer, with the pair having previously worked together at Napoli.

The two clubs had struggled to agree a fee for the Argentina international, but talkSPORT reports that they have now come to terms on a deal worth around £6m.

Fernandez will now undergo his medical with the Magpies before completing the deal ahead of this afternoon's 5pm transfer deadline, barring any late snags in negotiations.

Should the transfer go through then Fernandez would become Newcastle's seventh signing of the summer, after Salomon Rondon, Martin Dubravka, Kenedy, Yoshinori Muto, Fabian Schar and Ki Sung-yueng.

Newcastle will begin their Premier League campaign at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday lunchtime.
