Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves left out of Portugal squad

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves is a surprise omission from Portugal's 23-man squad for the World Cup.

Portugal boss Fernando Santos has decided to leave Ruben Neves out of his squad for the World Cup.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder has enjoyed a stellar campaign in the Championship and has featured in his nation's most recent internationals.

However, the 21-year-old is one of 12 players to miss out on the final squad as Portugal look to back up their victory at Euro 2016 two years ago.

There is also no place for former Manchester United winger Nani and ex-Swansea City attacker Eder, who scored the winning goal in the European Championship final against France.

However, Premier League players Cedric Soares, Adrien Silva and Bernando Silva all feature, as does Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal face fixtures against Spain, Morocco and Iran during the group stages in Russia.
