Southampton are reportedly considering parting company with manager Nigel Adkins and replacing him with former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

Southampton are reportedly plotting a shock offer for former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

The Saints, who suffered a 6-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday, have lost their opening four Premier League matches and currently sit bottom of the table.

Despite Nigel Adkins masterminding back-to-back promotions in the past two seasons, club chairman Nicola Cortese is said to be considering the 47-year-old's position following the team's slow start this term.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Benitez is keen to return to England and the South Coast club are considering an approach for him.

Benitez has been out of management since being sacked by Inter Milan in December 2010.
