Spurs beat Southampton 3-2 to go above Manchester United in Premier League

Southampton's home game against Tottenham Hotspur ended in a 3-2 defeat for the South Coast side in today's early Premier League kickoff, sending the London side above Manchester United in the table.

In a high-paced start to the game, Spurs almost took the lead after 12 minutes when Roberto Soldado's cross found Emmanuel Adebayor, but the striker couldn't make contact with the ball.

A minute later, Southampton took the lead through Adam Lallana. The midfielder found space around 20 yards out, turned to goal and fired a low shot into the corner to make it 1-0.

Looking for an instant response, Gylfi Sigurdsson attempted a shot from 20 yards, but fired over.

Jay Rodriguez missed the chance to double the home side's lead on 24 minutes following Lallana's pass, but the forward curled his shot over the top of the Spurs goal.

Adebayor then equalised for Spurs just a minute later, as another Soldado cross was met on the volley by the Togolese international in the six-yard box.

Eight minutes into the second half, Spurs took the lead, courtesy of an own goal by Jos Hooiveld. A cross by Danny Rose was met by the Dutch defender, who side-footed the ball into his own net.

Just five minutes later, however, defensive mix-up in the Spurs box left Ricky Lambert with an open net. The Southampton striker side-footed the ball into the net to make it 2-2.

Tottenham took the lead again just three minutes later from a throw-in deep in the home side's half. After a scramble in the box, the ball fell to Adebayor, who fired it low and hard past Paulo Gazzaniga.

Soldado had three chances in the space of four minutes to put the game beyond the home side's reach, but his efforts missed the target.

Southampton had a chance to equalise in injury time, but the away side held on for the win, the first under the tutelage of caretaker manager Tim Sherwood.

The result sends Spurs to seventh place in the Premier League table on 30 points. Southampton remain in ninth place, on 24 points.
