Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane reportedly opens talks with the Lilywhites over a new deal, with his current contract due to expire in 2024.

Tottenham Hotspur are now in discussions with star striker Harry Kane over a new contract, according to a report.

As things stand, the England captain is due to become a free agent at the end of next season, having entered the final 18 months of his existing contract in North London.

Tottenham rejected the advances of Manchester City and Manchester United in 2021 with the hope of tying Kane down to a new deal - optimism which increased with the arrival of Antonio Conte and their top-four finish last term.

However, Spurs are no closer to ending their 15-year trophy drought, leading to speculation that Kane could try to force an exit again this summer to fulfil his silverware ambitions.

The Lilywhites have put contract talks for Kane on the back burner over the past few months, with the club's transfer activity and the World Cup taking precedence for both parties.

Now, Football Insider claims that Kane is now negotiating a new contract with Tottenham, who have made a renewal their number one priority, although talks are only at an early stage.

The 29-year-old recently opened up on his contract situation to the Evening Standard, claiming last month that there was little in the way of discussions, but he expected talks to heat up in the coming months.

Spurs are still mathematically in with a chance of winning the Premier League title, while they have a one-goal deficit to overturn in their Champions League last-16 tie with AC Milan, and Kane is determined to help the Lilywhites end their barren streak without silverware.

"There's not been much talk if I'm totally honest. I'm sure they'll be conversations over the coming months but to be honest I'm just focused on this season and doing my best for the team," Kane said.

"There's still a lot to play for, trying to get in the Champions League, we have the FA Cup and the Champions League still to try to win. My focus is on that. I know there's going to be rumours, a lot of talk and speculation about my future but I'm just focused on what I can do.

"Of course I still want to win trophies for Tottenham Hotspur. That's been my goal since I started playing first-team football with them. It hasn't happened. I've been open about [how I feel about] that but I'll continue to try to achieve that.

"We have a really good squad, a fantastic manager and there's no reason why we still can't be successful this season. We've just got to put everything we can into it and see where we are come May."

Kane became Tottenham's highest goalscorer of all time with his 267th strike against Manchester City earlier this month, surpassing Jimmy Greaves's long-standing record of 266 goals.

The striker also has 62 assists to boast from his 418 games in a Spurs shirt, while he has 19 goals and three assists to show from 32 matches in the 2022-23 campaign.

Tottenham sit one point clear of Newcastle United in fourth place in the Premier League table and are next in action at home to Chelsea on Sunday lunchtime.
