Roberto Martinez states that "stability and patience" are necessary at football clubs following the sacking of Sunderland boss Steve Bruce.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez believes that Steve Bruce should have been given time at Sunderland after bringing in a number of players in the summer.

The ex-Manchester United player was sacked by the Black Cats board following just two wins this season.

"Time is needed when you bring a lot of players into the football club, just for the players to settle in, for the players to feel themselves and that always take time," Martinez told Sky Sports News.

"That was a little bit of a surprise, [but] in football unfortunately nothing surprises you anymore. The stability and patience are two words that are needed in a football club."

Mark Hughes and Martin O'Neill are currently the favourites to take the helm on Wearside.
