Dave Whelan admits that he is prepared to sack Roberto Martinez if it's in the best interest of Wigan.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has said that he would sack manager Roberto Martinez tomorrow if it meant keeping his side in the Premier League.

The Latics chief, who has owned the team since 1995, insists that he bases all decisions on what is best for the football club as a whole. However, he is confident that the Spaniard is still the right man for the job, despite losing seven consecutive league games in a row.

"I've sacked a few managers here and I had a run where I sacked two within six months," he is quoted as saying in The Mirror.

"Everything comes down to what's in the best interests of the football club. Personalities don't come into it. What you want is the club being run properly from top to bottom, and Roberto does that.

"If I thought for one moment that by sacking him I could keep Wigan in the Premier League, I'd do it tomorrow, without question, because I only want what's best for Wigan. But I know that would be the wrong thing to do."

The Greater Manchester outfit can go level on points with Wolves with a win at Molineux this afternoon.
