Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan says that he is "really sorry" that his side relegated Blackburn Rovers.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has expressed his regret at Blackburn Rovers' relegation.

The Latics won 1-0 at Ewood Park on Monday night to secure their Premier League status for an eighth consecutive season and resign Rovers to the Championship.

Whelan played for Blackburn during his playing career and broke his leg while representing them in the 1960 FA Cup final.

While he was delighted with Wigan's achievement, he offered his sympathy towards his former club.

"I'm really sorry that we put Rovers down," Whelan told Sky Sports News.

"I had 11 fantastic years here. Of course I'm Wigan Athletic through and through but I'm really sorry Rovers have gone down."

The win moved Wigan up to 15th in the Premier League table.
