Wolfsburg make light work of Freiburg

Wolfsburg remain second in the Bundesliga table after dispatching of Freiburg 3-0 at the Volkswagen Arena.

Wolfsburg's pursuit of table-topping Bayern Munich shows no signs of abating as Dieter Hecking's charges dispatched struggling Freiburg 3-0 in this afternoon's Bundesliga clash at the Volkswagen Arena.

The hosts were quickest out of the starting blocks as Vieirinha let rip with a 35-yard missile that flew just wide in the first minute of the game.

It was all one-way traffic in the first quarter of an hour and, before long, Wolfsburg were a goal up as Kevin de Bruyne beat two defenders before slotting home at the near post.

Freiburg enjoyed a bright spell after conceding as Christian Gunter and Stefan Mitrovic threatened with dangerous efforts, but soon enough the hosts were back on top as Bas Dost bundled the ball wide from close range.

The second half was a more end-to-end affair as both teams could have notched more goals, but the advantage ultimately fell to Wolfsburg, who were given a penalty after Roman Burki brought De Bruyne down in the box.

Ricardo Rodriguez stepped up and duly smashed the ball into the top-right corner of the net to double his side's lead and put them in pole position to secure all three points.

The game was well and truly put to bed five minutes before the end when Maximilian Arnold collected De Bruyne's ball before slotting home following a counter-attack.

Wolfsburg remain second in the Bundesliga table, but 11 points continue to separate them from league leaders Bayern. Meanwhile, Freiburg remain second from bottom.
